Millicent Churcher (Australian Catholic University)

In line with attempts to expand the conceptual toolkit beyond consent for addressing the ethics of sex (e.g., Bauer 2014; Kukla 2018; Churcher and Gatens 2019; Lamb, Gable, and Ruyter 2021; Churcher 2024) I interrogate the meaning of reciprocity in sexual relations. It is often said that ethical sex involves a commitment to reciprocity. However, the meaning of reciprocity in this context is not always clear, or it is understood and practiced in a way that (re)produces problematic power imbalances. I explore the different ways in which reciprocity in the sphere of sexual relations can be conceived, and the risks and challenges associated with enactments of reciprocity against the backdrop of structural oppression.
