Open Gender Journal is an open access journal. The journal publishes scholarly contributions from the fields of gender studies and women’s studies, as well as from adjacent fields such as queer studies, trans* inter* studies, disability studies, racism studies, critical whiteness and postcolonial studies, diversity studies and intersectionality.

Open Gender Journal promotes free and unrestricted access to gender studies: All articles are accessible to readers worldwide free of charge. For authors, no publication costs are incurred. Free licenses (Creative Commons BY 4.0) guarantee that the content can be freely distributed and be reused.

The journal exclusively releases original publications which provide an independent scholarly contribution to gender studies. Articles can be submitted at any time and are published on an rolling basis after having gone through a double-blind peer review procedure.

Open Gender Journal is a publisher-independent Open Access journal jointly published by the Margherita von Brentano Center, the Fachgesellschaft Geschlechterstudien (Gender Studies Association), Gender Studies in Cologne (GeStiK), University of Cologne, and the Center for Transdisciplinary Gender Studies, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Gender Research Office at the University of Vienna. The editorial team of the journal is composed of academics from various subjects/disciplines, status groups and institutions. It thus reflects the inter/transdisciplinary nature of gender studies and the diversity in the field.

Currently, the Open Gender Journal is funded by the DFG project "Open Gender Journal - Expansion Grant". It sends out a newsletter twice a year for interested parties. In it, the editors inform about current publications and calls for papers and share insights into the work of the journal and event information.
