The revolution cannot be unfelt - Affect, emotion and political protest in Egypt
The pictures of occupied Tahrir Square went viral in 2011 and became an almost global icon of (successful) mass protest, imbued with hope and enthusiasm. The talk introduces the concept of the Midān Moments concept developed by Bilgin Ayata and me (Ayata/Harders 2023) in order to understand the workings of affect and emotion in political protest in Egypt. I argue that the revolutionary situation of 2011 was a cognitive as well as a bodily experience. The occupation of Tahrir Square in 2011 as a space and an event which enabled new and different feelings to come into being. I argue that such feelings cannot be unfelt, even after years of repression and depression. Thus, a situated, intersectional conceptualization of affect and transformations allows to account for the more long-term, less visible, and more subtle forms of change which grew out of the Egyptian uprising.
