In response to the devaluation of the interdisciplinary field of gender studies, attacks on individual gender researchers, and assaults on social media, the idea of a coordinated action in the form of a Science Day emerged from the gender studies community in late autumn 2017. This day aimed to publicly highlight the excitement, diversity, and scientific excellence of gender studies, emphasizing its role as a critical science that addresses significant societal issues and real-world phenomena.
The Science Day, first held under the hashtag #4GenderStudies on December 18, 2017, has since been conducted annually around December 18. Gender researchers and universities in German-speaking countries participate with the goal of showcasing the diversity of gender studies and underscoring the scientific importance of the field. At Freie Universität Berlin, gender studies are embedded in numerous disciplines. Their diversity and complexity are particularly evident through various disciplinary approaches and perspectives.
The range of questions and methods used to study gender relations varies by discipline. Despite this diversity, the projects are united by their focus on critical and self-reflective scientific approaches, as well as their emphasis on socially relevant topics.
The Margherita-von-Brentano Center for Gender Studies has invited doctoral candidates, postdocs, and academic staff from Freie Universität Berlin to participate in a poster exhibition as part of the #4GenderStudies Science Day.
On December 18, participants will have the opportunity to present their posters to the audience during an Open Mic session. The best-rated poster will be awarded. These pitches will be recorded and featured in an online exhibition, launching in early 2025.
